GB News Breakfast interrupted regular programming to report breaking news: US President Donald Trump has signed a bill authorizing the release of the Epstein files, ending months of speculation about their contents.
During the broadcast, hosts Ellie Costello and Stephen Dixon discussed the development with Freddy Gray, Deputy Editor of The Spectator. Gray criticized the Trump administration’s handling of the situation, saying it has been mishandled from the start.
“Yesterday’s move shows that the Trump administration got it wrong,” Gray said. “Trump has dominated global news for months, keeping everyone guessing, but this time, the Democrats have seized the moment. They believe they can release information gradually from the Epstein files, which may suggest Trump was closer to Epstein than he claims.”
Gray also pointed out the complexity of the files: “Many wealthy and powerful people were connected to Epstein. Some may be tarnished unfairly, having only communicated with him for legitimate reasons like charitable donations.”
The discussion highlighted the political tension surrounding the release. Trump had previously called the disclosure a “Democrat hoax” and resisted releasing the files for months. He insists he severed ties with Epstein years ago and has never been accused of any wrongdoing in connection with the financier.
On November 17, Trump told reporters Epstein had connections with Democrats, and he didn’t want the files to “detract from the great success of the Republican Party.”
Jeffrey Epstein, a financier, died in his Manhattan jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on charges of sexually abusing and trafficking underage girls. The release of these files is expected to have far-reaching political and public implications.
