Zelensky and Trump phone call over Vladimir Putin's disturbing new tactic in Ukraine

In a late-night phone call on Saturday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump following one of the largest Russian drone and missile attacks in recent months.

According to reports, Russia launched hundreds of Shahed drones and ballistic missiles targeting Ukraine’s energy grid late Friday night, causing massive blackouts across Kyiv and several other regions. The strikes killed one child and injured at least two dozen people, while parts of the capital were left without electricity and running water.

Zelensky described the call with Trump as “very positive and productive.” Writing on X (formerly Twitter), he said he informed Trump about the attacks and praised his willingness to support Ukraine.

“We discussed ways to strengthen our air defense and reviewed several concrete proposals. There are solid ideas on how to truly enhance our security,” Zelensky wrote.

He also congratulated Trump on his role in securing the Israel-Hamas ceasefire deal, which freed 48 Israeli and foreign hostages calling it “an outstanding achievement.”

“If one war can be stopped, others can be stopped too including Russia’s war against Ukraine,” he added.

The White House has not yet issued an official statement about the call, according to the Kyiv Independent.

Russia’s Overnight Assault on Kyiv

Ukraine’s Air Force confirmed that 465 Shahed-type drones and 32 cruise and ballistic missiles were launched overnight. Air defenses intercepted 405 drones and 15 missiles, preventing even greater devastation.

Loud explosions were reported around 2:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. local time, with Kyiv’s air defense systems engaging multiple targets. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said emergency services responded quickly as missiles hit infrastructure sites.

By Saturday morning, power company DTEK announced that electricity had been restored to over 800,000 households in Kyiv, with full power returning to the wider Kyiv region by 1 a.m. local time on October 11.

The attacks come as Russia intensifies its campaign against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure ahead of the winter months a strategy aimed at crippling civilian life and testing the country’s resilience.
