In a stark new warning, Martin Jäger, the newly appointed head of Germany’s BND intelligence service, has raised alarm over Europe’s fragile peace and the growing risk of a direct military confrontation between Russia and NATO.
Speaking before German lawmakers, Jäger cautioned that Moscow may no longer shy away from testing NATO’s resolve, suggesting that Europe is being “paralyzed by fear and inaction.”
“At best, there is a frosty peace in Europe that could turn into a hot conflict at any moment,” Jäger warned. “We must be ready for further escalations.”
The German intelligence chief accused Russia of attempting to undermine NATO, destabilize European democracies, and divide Western societies through psychological and hybrid warfare. He emphasized that Germany has become Russia’s top target in Europe because of its economic strength and support for Ukraine.
This warning follows a series of unidentified drone sightings near major European airports in Germany, Denmark, and Norway. The mysterious incidents have forced temporary flight suspensions, and while Russia has denied any involvement, Western officials suspect otherwise.
According to Jäger, the Kremlin’s long-term goal is to expand its influence westward and make economically stronger European nations dependent on Russia. He said bluntly:
“To achieve this goal, Russia will not hesitate to engage in direct military confrontation with NATO if necessary.”
Jäger urged European leaders to overcome their hesitation and prepare for the possibility of escalation much sooner than anticipated.
“We cannot assume that a Russian attack is years away. We are already under pressure today,” he stated. “Moscow views leniency as weakness and we must draw the right conclusions.”
His remarks come as Russia continues its air and missile strikes in Ukraine, while Ukrainian drone attacks are increasingly reaching targets deep inside Russian territory.
With tensions rising across the continent, Jäger’s warning highlights a chilling reality Europe’s uneasy peace could shatter at any moment.
