President Donald Trump has once again raised questions about his health and state of mind after opening up about his own mortality and expressing a deep desire to “make it to heaven.”
Speaking at the White House during an Oval Office meeting, Trump reflected on faith, morality, and religion while answering a journalist’s question about a national prayer initiative planned ahead of America’s 250th anniversary.
The former president said that without faith or religion, “it’s hard for a country to be good,” adding that he personally wants “to prove to God” that he deserves to move on to “the next step.”
“If a country doesn’t have religion, doesn’t have faith, doesn’t have God, it’s going to be very hard to be a good country,” Trump said. “You know, there’s no reason to be good. I want to be good because you want to prove to God so you go to that next step. That’s very important to me.”
Trump’s comments quickly fueled online speculation about his health and mental state, with many social media users interpreting his remarks as a sign that the 79-year-old might be confronting his own mortality.
One user wrote, “When older people suddenly start talking about God and heaven, we call it ‘cramming for the final exam.’” Another added, “He knows his time is coming and thinks talking about faith can balance out a lifetime of wrongdoing.”
Others were more critical, saying Trump’s late-life religious turn appeared insincere. “He talks about heaven while spreading hate,” one commenter wrote. “That’s not how faith works.”
This is not the first time Trump has hinted at thoughts about the afterlife. Earlier this year, he told Fox & Friends that he hoped his efforts to bring peace between Ukraine and Russia might “help him get into heaven,” joking that he had been told he’s “not doing well” in that regard.
“If I can get to heaven, this will be one of the reasons,” he said at the time.
Trump’s recent remarks, combined with his unfiltered interviews and occasional health-related speculation, have reignited debates about his well-being and mindset as the 2024 election season approaches.
