The US President has issued a stern five-word warning to Hamas as efforts continue to finalize a ceasefire and hostage-release agreement over Gaza. Posting on his Truth Social account, Donald Trump demanded urgency from the Palestinian militia, declaring: “I will not tolerate delay.”
This warning comes as a Hamas delegation prepares to travel to Cairo for indirect negotiations with Israel. The talks are centered on Trump’s proposal, which lays out a detailed roadmap aimed at ending the conflict, securing the release of hostages, and shaping Gaza’s future governance.
On Friday, Hamas announced it was prepared to release the remaining 48 hostages and give up its governing authority in Gaza. However, the group stopped short of confirming whether it would hand over its weapons, signaling that more discussions would be required. The US President welcomed the initial statement, ordering Israel to halt its airstrikes in Gaza to give diplomacy a chance. He publicly thanked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for pausing military operations, calling it a necessary step toward progress.
Trump then turned his focus back to Hamas, urging them to move quickly or risk losing the opportunity for peace. In another message, he emphasized the urgency of the moment, writing: “Let’s get this done, FAST. Everyone will be treated fairly!”
According to reports, delegations from Israel and Hamas are expected to begin indirect meetings in Cairo on Sunday. These discussions will set the stage for a potential exchange: Israel releasing prisoners in return for Hamas freeing hostages.
Trump’s 20-point plan is ambitious and highly specific. It requires Hamas to release all hostages alive or deceased within 72 hours of Israel publicly accepting the deal. In return, Israel would free 250 Palestinians serving life sentences and an additional 1,700 detained after the October 7, 2023 attacks. The proposal also envisions the phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and the complete disarmament of Hamas.
Perhaps most controversially, the plan suggests establishing a transitional authority in Gaza led by the US President himself. Hamas would have no role in governing, directly or indirectly, while Israel would be barred from occupying or annexing the territory. Importantly, Trump’s framework also makes clear that no residents of Gaza would be forced to leave.
With both sides now preparing to enter talks, Trump’s warning signals the high stakes and limited patience for delays. The coming days will reveal whether Hamas accepts the deal in full or risks facing renewed military escalation.
