Trump mocks Putin as he dismisses Russian President's defiant message with 7-word putdown

After dismissing fresh U.S. sanctions as “futile,” Russian President Vladimir Putin received a characteristically sharp and sarcastic response from President Donald Trump a short, seven-word remark that’s now making headlines worldwide.

As Russia braces for new economic sanctions, President Putin appeared defiant, calling the move an “unfriendly act” but claiming that Moscow would never surrender to outside pressure over the Ukraine conflict. Speaking at the Russian Geographical Society in Moscow, he admitted the sanctions would bring “certain consequences” but insisted they would not cause any “significant impact” on the Russian economy.

However, when reporters asked President Trump about Putin’s remarks, his reaction was filled with irony. During a press briefing at the White House, Trump smiled and said, “Let’s see how it all works out.”

The U.S. President added lightly, “I’m glad he feels that way that’s good,” before joking, “I’ll let you know about it six months from now.” His defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, was seen smiling beside him as the room broke into muted laughter.

This exchange came shortly after Trump unveiled what he described as “tremendous” new sanctions targeting Russia’s oil sector. The U.S. is now moving to freeze the American assets of Rosneft and Lukoil, two of Russia’s largest energy firms, while also warning global financial institutions against doing business with them.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that the sanctions include a ban on American companies and individuals engaging in trade with these entities. The impact has already begun to ripple across markets, with major Chinese state oil companies reportedly suspending seaborne purchases of Russian oil.

In response, Putin’s close ally Dmitry Medvedev lashed out, calling Trump’s move “an act of war against Russia” and accusing Washington of aligning with what he called “insane Europe.” Writing on Telegram, the former Russian president said:

“The United States is our adversary, and their so-called ‘peacemaker’ has now fully stepped onto the warpath against Russia.”

Whether Trump’s latest sanctions will truly pressure Moscow remains to be seen, but his seven-word comment “Let’s see how it all works out” has already become the quote of the moment, symbolizing the tense yet unpredictable relationship between Washington and Moscow.
