Stephen Colbert fans in hysterics as he trolls Melania Trump with brutal dig

Stephen Colbert’s “Melania Trump” Interview on The Late Show Has Viewers in Stitches

During Monday night’s episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the host once again proved why his political parodies remain late-night favorites. Colbert invited actress Lauren Benanti, known for her spot-on impression of Melania Trump, for a hilarious mock interview that took aim at the former First Lady, her husband, and life inside the Trump household.

Lauren, dressed as “Melania,” joined Colbert to discuss the fictional version of her life during Donald Trump’s second term. The comedic exchange included jokes about the Kennedy Center Opera House, Eric Trump, and the former president’s alleged health issues — all delivered with Colbert’s signature satire.

When Colbert jokingly asked how she felt about the idea of renaming the Kennedy Center Opera House after her, Benanti’s Melania quipped, “It is such an honor. I cannot wait to change my name to Melania Kennedy.” The audience erupted with laughter as Colbert clarified that the building, not her name, would receive the honor. She playfully responded with a dramatic opera-style vocal run, to which Colbert replied, “Wow, I didn’t realize you were a trained opera singer.”

Keeping the humor rolling, “Melania” shot back, “Oh no, that’s just the sound I make when Eric calls me ‘Mommy,’” — a line that had the crowd roaring.

The bit continued with Colbert teasing about Trump’s rumored health problems, saying the former president had been “out of view for a while” and was reportedly suffering from chronic venous insufficiency. Without missing a beat, the fake Melania responded, “Sadly, it’s true. He has a very small venous.”

Clips from the sketch quickly spread online, with fans flooding social media with praise. One viewer commented, “I needed this laugh — Colbert and Lauren are still the best!” Another added, “This version of Melania is my favorite — absolutely hilarious!”

The parody comes amid headlines surrounding The Late Show’s upcoming cancellation in May 2026, which will mark the end of its decade-long run on CBS. Many viewers believe the decision may have been politically influenced after Colbert criticized the network for allegedly offering Trump a “big, fat bribe” related to a Paramount Global–Skydance Media merger.

Following the news, Donald Trump responded on Truth Social, denying any involvement in the show’s cancellation. He wrote, “That is not true! The reason he was fired was a pure lack of talent, and the fact that this deficiency was costing CBS $50 million a year in losses — and it was only going to get worse!”

Despite the controversy, fans continue to celebrate Colbert’s wit and Benanti’s flawless impersonation. As one viewer summed it up, “I’m really going to miss this duo when The Late Show ends next year.”

Episodes of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert air weeknights at 11:35 PM ET on CBS and are available for streaming on Paramount+ the following day.
