Russians Are Being Taught to Hate Britain, With the UK Portrayed as a “Satanic State”
Russian state media is ramping up its anti-British propaganda, with Vladimir Putin’s top TV host, Vladimir Solovyov, launching a series of bizarre historical attacks against the United Kingdom.
On his prime-time talk show, Solovyov described Britain as a “completely satanic state,” claiming that London and its intelligence agencies are the driving force behind Ukraine’s ongoing resistance to Moscow’s invasion. The narrative paints the UK as Russia’s eternal enemy, rooted in centuries-old grudges.
Solovyov began his tirade by revisiting a 16th-century episode involving Queen Elizabeth I and Ivan the Terrible. He claimed that Britain’s hostility toward Russia began when Elizabeth allegedly rejected the Russian tsar’s marriage proposal. “Britain has always hated us, simply because Ivan the Terrible once proposed to marry that woman,” he told viewers. “A completely satanic state,” he added, before turning his criticism toward King George V, Winston Churchill, and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
The propagandist also blamed Britain for multiple historical conflicts, including the Crimean War (1853–1856), and accused King George V of betraying his cousin, Tsar Nicholas II, by refusing to offer asylum during the Russian Revolution. “Britain has always betrayed us,” he said.
Even during World War II, when the UK and the Soviet Union fought as allies, Solovyov argued that “Britain was the biggest loser” and mocked Winston Churchill as “the most unsuccessful Prime Minister.” He added that after the war, “America fooled Britain and destroyed its global power,” claiming that this humiliation fuels London’s supposed hatred of Russia today.
Adding to this anti-UK narrative, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), led by Sergey Naryshkin, alleged that British agents are plotting to stage an attack on a Ukrainian naval ship or a civilian vessel in a European port. The SVR claims the mission involves “traitorous Russians” trained in the UK for sabotage operations, supposedly to justify more Western aid for Ukraine.
The agency accused London of trying to provoke China as well, saying the saboteurs would use “Chinese-made underwater equipment” to make it appear that Beijing supports Moscow’s actions in Ukraine.
In its statement, the SVR described Britain as “Perfidious Albion,” claiming that the UK’s “rapid decline into the backwaters of history” has weakened its intelligence services. It alleged that Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government is planning “a vile provocation” in response to Russia’s military gains.
This coordinated media campaign shows how Moscow continues to frame Britain as a historic adversary, using distorted history and conspiratorial claims to stoke nationalism and justify its war narrative.
