Hollywood legend Robert De Niro isn’t holding back when it comes to speaking his mind about Donald Trump. The Jackie Brown and Taxi Driver star sparked a wave of online buzz after hinting that he might enter the political arena himself.
During an interview on MSNBC over the weekend, the 82-year-old actor fiercely criticized Trump and voiced his support for the growing “No Kings” movement, a nationwide protest defending democracy. Shortly after the show aired, De Niro took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote: “Might have to run for office.” That one sentence immediately set social media on fire with speculation about whether he’s seriously considering a presidential bid.
De Niro drew parallels between the modern-day fight for democracy and the American Revolution of 1775, saying Americans once stood up to a king and may need to do it again.
“The original ‘No Kings’ protest was 250 years ago,” he said. “We declared our independence and fought for democracy. Now, we have a would-be king who wants to take it away King Donald I. We are rising up again, peacefully, to say ‘No Kings.’”
The Goodfellas star praised the millions of Americans who took part in the ‘No Kings’ marches across all 50 states, calling it an inspiring show of unity.
“We can’t let up. He doesn’t want to leave the White House,” De Niro warned. “The only way to deal with a bully is to face him and push back.”
The protests, which took place on October 18, were the second major wave of the No Kings demonstrations. Other celebrities, including actor John Cusack, also joined the movement. Cusack, who marched in Chicago, told CNN:
“You can’t create chaos just to hold on to power. We all see the plan and we’re saying no.”
As speculation continues to swirl, fans are wondering: Could Robert De Niro actually step into politics? One thing is clear he’s not afraid to speak out when it comes to defending American democracy.
