The tensions between Russia and the United States have reached a new boiling point after Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a stern warning about potential U.S.-made long-range missiles being supplied to Ukraine.
Recent reports suggest that the U.S. may relax restrictions on Ukraine’s use of some Western-supplied missiles, sparking a furious response from Moscow. Putin cautioned that if Ukraine were ever to deploy Tomahawk missiles against Russia, the retaliation would be “very strong — if not overwhelming.”
“Dialogue is always better than confrontation or war. We have always supported continuing dialogue,” Putin told journalists. “But let them think carefully. Our response will be overwhelming if such weapons are used against us.”
Putin’s comments came just days after Donald Trump canceled a planned summit in Budapest, although the Russian leader said he was still open to diplomatic talks. He stressed that Russia “will never bow to pressure” from Washington or any other country.
The warning followed new U.S. sanctions targeting Russia’s largest oil companies, which the Kremlin described as “unfriendly and politically motivated.” Putin said the sanctions would not significantly harm Russia’s economy, asserting that the country’s energy sector remains stable and confident.
“This is, of course, an attempt to pressure Russia,” he said. “But no self-respecting nation decides anything under pressure.”
Meanwhile, former Russian President and Putin ally Dmitry Medvedev accused Trump of abandoning diplomacy, calling him a “talkative peacemaker who has now chosen the path of war.” Medvedev added that Washington’s latest decisions amounted to an “act of war” against Russia.
The White House defended the sanctions, saying they were imposed because of “Russia’s lack of serious commitment to the peace process” in Ukraine.
Trump later told reporters, “Every time I speak to Vladimir, the conversations start well — but they don’t go anywhere.”
As fears of escalation grow, a recently released global analysis highlighted the 10 safest countries to seek refuge in the event of a nuclear World War 3 scenario, underscoring how fragile the global situation has become.
