Putin claims Russia has tested 'new kind of weapon' in chilling WW3 threat

Russian President Vladimir Putin has revealed that Russia has upgraded its strategic nuclear arsenal and successfully tested what he described as a “new kind of weapon.” Speaking during a press conference in Tajikistan, Putin said Moscow continues to strengthen its nuclear capabilities while keeping the door open for renewed arms control talks with the United States.

Putin expressed cautious optimism about extending the New START Treaty, a key nuclear arms reduction agreement signed in 2010 between Russia and the United States. The treaty, which limits both nations to no more than 1,550 deployed nuclear warheads and 700 deployed missiles and bombers, is due to expire in February.

“We’re ready to negotiate if the American side sees it as acceptable and useful,” Putin said. “If not, then no. It would be a pity because there would be nothing left at all in terms of deterrence for strategic offensive weapons.”

Putin warned that if Washington decides against renewal, Russia would continue advancing its nuclear programs independently. “It’s not critical for us,” he added, noting that Russia is already preparing to deploy new weapons as part of its ongoing modernization efforts.

Trump’s Response and Possible Arms Deal Extension

U.S. President Donald Trump had earlier described Putin’s proposal to extend the treaty as “a good idea,” signaling potential willingness for cooperation. However, Putin stressed that time is running short to reach an agreement before the pact expires.

If the treaty lapses, it would mark the end of the last remaining arms control framework between the world’s two largest nuclear powers a scenario experts say could trigger a new global arms race.

Putin Praises Trump’s Peace Efforts

In a surprising turn, Putin also praised Donald Trump’s peace efforts, particularly his attempts to mediate ceasefires in Gaza and Ukraine. When asked whether Trump deserved a Nobel Peace Prize, Putin declined to comment directly but noted that the former U.S. president “is doing a lot to resolve complex crises that have lasted for years and even decades.”

The Russian leader said his discussions with Trump during their August summit in Alaska focused on potential solutions for ending the war in Ukraine. “We agreed on the direction both our countries should move in to achieve peace,” Putin explained. “These are complex issues that require further analysis, but we remain committed to continuing our dialogue.”

A Warning and an Opening

Putin’s remarks highlight the fragile balance between deterrence and diplomacy in Russia-U.S. relations. While warning of a possible end to arms control, he also left the door open for negotiation provided that both nations act “in good faith.”

With nuclear tensions rising globally, analysts say the fate of the New START Treaty could determine whether the coming decade sees renewed cooperation or a dangerous escalation in the nuclear arms race.
