NATO fighter jets were deployed over Poland after Russia carried out one of its most intense missile and drone strikes targeting western Ukraine, sparking fears of further escalation near NATO borders.
Poland’s Operational Command confirmed:
“Polish and allied aircraft are operating intensively in our airspace. Ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems are on the highest level of readiness. These are precautionary actions aimed at protecting citizens and ensuring the security of Polish airspace.”
The statement added that the situation is being closely monitored and all forces remain ready to respond immediately if needed.
Massive Strikes Hit Lviv and Western Regions
The city of Lviv, located just 43 miles from the Polish border, was shrouded in thick smoke after a series of devastating attacks. Local authorities described the assault as the most severe since the start of the war, over three and a half years ago. Residents were urged to remain indoors and keep windows closed as fires raged through industrial zones and residential areas.
Mayor Andriy Sadovyi confirmed that the Sparrow Techno Park was destroyed:
“This is a civilian facility with no military connection.”
Despite that, Russian sources falsely claimed the site was used for NATO supply operations to Ukraine.
Hypersonic Missiles and Strategic Bombers Used
According to Ukrainian reports, the strike involved a mix of Kinzhal (Dagger) hypersonic missiles, Kalibr cruise missiles, guided aerial bombs, and around 700 drones.
Russia also deployed Tu-95MS and Tu-160 strategic bombersaircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons but used here with conventional missiles. MiG-31 fighter jets escorted the bombers during the offensive.
Energy Infrastructure Targeted
The strikes caused widespread power outages and damaged energy plants in several regions. The Burshtyn Power Plant in Ivano-Frankivsk and the Ladyzhyn Thermal Power Plant in Vinnytsia were both hit. Odesa also suffered drone attacks that set fire to infrastructure and left neighborhoods without electricity or water.
At least one person was killed and ten others injured across the affected areas.
Russian Energy Sector Also Under Pressure
Meanwhile, a massive fire broke out at a Russian oil refinery in Kstovo, Nizhny Novgorod region. Satellite data from NASA detected thermal anomalies consistent with the blaze.
Ukraine’s continued long-range strikes have severely disrupted Russia’s refining capacity nearly 40% of its facilities have been damaged. Analysts report that Russia’s oil reserves are now at a five-year low, leading to rising fuel prices and shortages across the country.
