Former Conservative MP Michael Portillo has sharply criticized US President Donald Trump, calling him “incoherent and clumsy” during a live discussion on GB News. Speaking with veteran broadcaster Eamonn Holmes, Portillo shared his mixed views on Trump’s role in brokering the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas a deal that led to the release of several Israeli hostages from Gaza earlier today.
During the conversation, Eamonn Holmes noted Trump’s upbeat tone while discussing the ceasefire. “We talk about the politics and the diplomacy involved,” Holmes said. “You probably saw him saying, ‘We’re going to have a great celebration.’ I’m not sure I’d be sounding so cheerful, given the tragic loss of life that’s taken place. How much credit would you give Trump for getting this done? Could anyone else have achieved it as directly as he has?”
Portillo began by acknowledging Trump’s effectiveness in achieving results. “I think the answer to the second question is easy – no. I don’t think anybody else could have gotten it done, and therefore the credit has to go to Trump,” he said.
However, his praise quickly turned into pointed criticism. Portillo described Trump as a man “incapable of constructing a sentence in the English language,” questioning how someone so “inarticulate and clumsy” could achieve diplomatic breakthroughs of this magnitude.
He continued, “The man who called himself the Great Dealmaker once offered everything to Vladimir Putin on a plate and was surprised when that didn’t lead to peace. I see him so inarticulate and so clumsy that I find it difficult to understand how he achieves these things. But everyone is giving him credit, and of course, these are team efforts.”
Portillo went on to suggest that Trump’s success likely depends on the strength of his administration. “If he’s picked the right staffers, that’s to his credit,” he added. “If he’s surrounded himself with capable people, then the results reflect well on him even if his personal involvement might be limited. I find it hard to imagine he has the patience to achieve much directly, but he’s at the head of something that clearly has achieved a great deal.”
The remarks sparked debate online, with some praising Portillo’s honesty and others arguing that Trump’s unconventional communication style has never stopped him from achieving results on the world stage.
As discussions over Trump’s foreign policy and Middle East peace efforts continue, Portillo’s comments highlight a familiar divide between Trump’s critics who see chaos, and his supporters who see results.
