Former Vice President Kamala Harris recently joined Jon Stewart on The Weekly Show podcast, where she opened up about her new book 107 Days and offered rare insight into her relationship with President Joe Biden during and after the 2024 election.
During the wide-ranging discussion, Harris surprised both Stewart and listeners when she firmly stated that Biden was “fully competent” to serve another four years in office.
The conversation began with Stewart questioning whether Harris’s loyalty to Biden had made it harder for her to define her own political identity during the campaign. Harris admitted she may have misjudged how strongly voters wanted her to separate herself from Biden, saying:
“I care about him deeply, and I didn’t want to add to all the criticism he was facing. I didn’t think it was necessary.”
She acknowledged that her relationship with Biden during the campaign was “complicated,” but noted they still keep in touch and remain on good terms.
When Stewart pressed her on whether her defense of Biden referred to his governing ability or personal competence, Harris didn’t hesitate.
“No, I’m not talking about competence I believe he was fully competent to serve,” she said.
Stewart appeared visibly surprised and replied, “That surprises me, actually.”
Harris explained that running for president and governing are two entirely different challenges:
“Being a candidate is like running a marathon at a sprinter’s pace — and you’ve got tomatoes thrown at you the whole time.”
Stewart countered that many Americans see the presidency itself as a nonstop test of endurance. Harris agreed that the pressures of being a sitting president while campaigning are “a lot” to handle.
Her candid defense of Biden sparked widespread discussion online, especially as debates about the 82-year-old former president’s age and mental sharpness continue to shape public opinion.
In 107 Days, Harris reportedly reflects on her time in the White House and the balancing act between loyalty, leadership, and personal ambition — a theme that came through powerfully in her exchange with Stewart.
