GB News interrupted its regular programming on Monday evening (October 14) to air breaking news coverage of former President Donald Trump posthumously awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
The deeply emotional ceremony was held in the newly renovated White House Rose Garden, marking what would have been Charlie Kirk’s 32nd birthday. Trump presented the nation’s highest civilian honor to Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, who accepted the medal on her husband’s behalf.
The former president returned to Washington, D.C. early Tuesday morning after a trip to the Middle East, where he celebrated a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Speaking at the ceremony, Trump said he “raced back” to attend the event, calling Kirk’s death “a demonic act of murder.”
“He loved this country,” Trump said. “It’s my privilege to posthumously award Charles James Kirk our nation’s highest civilian honor. I would not have missed this moment for anything in the world.”
Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was tragically killed on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University during the first stop of his American Comeback Tour. The event series aimed to encourage open political debate among college students.
Trump was the first to confirm Kirk’s death, later announcing that he would honor the late activist with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, describing him as “a giant of his generation.”
“Today, we’re here to honor a fearless warrior for liberty, a beloved leader who inspired millions of young Americans, and a patriot of the highest caliber the late, great Charlie Kirk,” Trump said.
Erika Kirk, who has now taken over as CEO of Turning Point USA, delivered a tearful speech at the ceremony.
“Your support of our family and the work Charlie devoted his life to is something I’ll cherish forever,” she told Trump. “President Trump, you’ve given my husband the best birthday gift he could ever have.”
Addressing the audience, she also encouraged young Americans involved with Turning Point USA to carry on her husband’s mission:
“Everything that Charlie built you are the legacy holders of that. His mission didn’t die with him; it lives through you.”
Ending her remarks with an emotional message, Erika said,
“Free yourself from fear. God began a mighty work in my husband, and I intend to see it through. We miss you, and we promise to make you proud. Happy birthday, my dear.”
