California Governor Gavin Newsom delivered a powerful response to Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who sparked outrage with her recent claim that the Democratic Party’s main constituency is made up of “Hamas terrorists, illegal aliens, and violent criminals.”
In a strongly worded post on X, Newsom accused the Trump administration of focusing on hate and division while ignoring the real crises affecting the nation.
“Spreading hatred is the only thing the Trump Administration seems to be able to accomplish,” Newsom wrote. “The government is shut down. Millions are about to lose their healthcare. Our troops aren’t getting paid. And they’re busy attacking Democrats on TV. It’s pathetic and un-American.”
Leavitt’s remarks, made during a Fox News interview, drew sharp criticism across social media. Many compared her comments to Hillary Clinton’s 2016 “basket of deplorables” remark except, as some noted, this attack went “ten times further.”
In the clip shared by Newsom, Leavitt said:
“The Democrat Party’s main constituency is made up of Hamas terrorists, illegal aliens, and violent criminals. That is who the Democrat Party is catering to not the Trump administration, not the White House, and not the Republican Party, which is standing up for law-abiding Americans.”
Critics called her statement “cartoonishly false” and an example of extreme political rhetoric that fuels division. Commentators also pointed out the hypocrisy just weeks ago, Republican officials had accused Democrats of using “dangerous rhetoric” following a tragic incident involving right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.
Observers say this controversy highlights the deepening hostility and political polarization that has defined the current administration’s communication strategy. While officials like Leavitt focus on attacks, key national issues such as the MAGA-driven government shutdown and potential loss of Affordable Care Act subsidies are putting millions of Americans at risk.
Newsom’s post resonated with many who feel that instead of governing, the Trump administration is engaging in performative outrage and political distraction. The governor’s message underscored what he called a “pattern of projection” accusing opponents of the very behavior that defines their own political tactics.
