U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Hamas, saying the group faces “complete obliteration” if it refuses to surrender power in Gaza and accept the proposed American-backed peace deal.
Speaking to CNN on Sunday, Trump said his administration’s plan aims to secure the release of all Israeli hostages taken during the October 7 attacks, in exchange for an end to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. However, Hamas has so far agreed only to parts of the plan and remains opposed to the idea of an international body overseeing Gaza’s administration a move reportedly supported by the U.S.
Delegations from Israel and Hamas are scheduled to meet in Cairo on Monday for indirect talks hosted by Egypt. According to Egyptian officials, U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff will also attend the negotiations. Egyptian diplomats say discussions will focus on a potential prisoner-hostage exchange and setting the framework for a ceasefire.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the talks as “the closest we’ve come to getting all of the hostages released.” Meanwhile, foreign ministers from eight Muslim-majority nations issued a joint statement supporting progress toward a lasting truce.
At the White House, Trump told reporters that while “some details still need to be worked out,” most sides are “pretty much in agreement.” He added, “You get the hostages back almost immediately. Negotiations are happening right now probably a couple of days left.”
Despite diplomatic progress, pro-Palestinian demonstrations continued across several Western countries. In the UK, police reported nearly 500 arrests during protests, including incidents linked to the banned organisation Palestine Action. In Spain, around 70,000 demonstrators rallied in Barcelona, with clashes leading to injuries among police and damage to several shops.
In contrast, tens of thousands gathered in Tel Aviv to support the peace deal and demand the safe return of Israeli hostages a sign that many Israelis see this as a critical moment for ending the conflict.
