As tensions between Ukraine and Russia continue to escalate, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made a direct appeal to former U.S. President Donald Trump, emphasizing the need for explicit security guarantees.
In a recent interview with Sky News, Zelensky stated that the ongoing conflict could only end if Ukraine first receives well-defined protection assurances. He highlighted that achieving this outcome would require bold action from Trump.
Zelensky also expressed hope that U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer would press Trump on the specifics of U.S. security commitments during the president’s state visit to Britain. "I hope he can have a very specific discussion on the U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine," Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian leader stressed the importance of formal agreements: "Before we end the war, I want all agreements in place documents supported by the U.S. and European partners. This is crucial."
Calls for Strong U.S. Action
Zelensky urged Trump to take decisive steps to counter Russian President Vladimir Putin, including supplying Ukraine with sufficient air defense systems and implementing impactful sanctions. "I believe the U.S. is strong enough to make its own decisions," Zelensky said. "Donald Trump can provide the necessary defense systems, and the U.S. has enough resources to make Putin reconsider his actions."
While Europe has already imposed 18 sanctions packages on Russia, Zelensky insists that a robust U.S. sanctions plan is still needed.
Trump’s Stance on Peace Talks
During his U.K. visit, Trump addressed reporters regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He emphasized the need for Ukraine to participate in peace negotiations, stating, "Zelensky’s going to have to make a deal," without directly blaming Russia for stalled talks.
Following a recent meeting with Putin, Trump indicated he would urge the Russian leader to meet with Zelensky before their planned trilateral summit. However, no such talks have yet been scheduled, with both sides setting preconditions.
A potential meeting between Trump and Zelensky could take place next week in New York during the United Nations General Assembly’s high-level session.
