U.S. Attorney General William Barr revealed that he issued a stark warning to Donald Trump shortly after Jeffrey Epstein’s death in federal custody.
During a deposition released by the House Oversight Committee, Barr explained that when he first heard the news, he immediately called Trump and told him, “You better brace for this.” According to Barr, both he and Trump were shocked, questioning how Epstein could have died while under federal watch.
Barr also confirmed that he had a separate conversation with Trump about the sex-trafficking charges against Epstein. Trump reportedly emphasized that he had cut ties with Epstein years earlier, citing a personal fallout over a real estate dispute. He further claimed to have banned Epstein from Mar-a-Lago after Epstein allegedly behaved inappropriately toward a young woman.
Despite Trump’s efforts to distance himself, Democrats on the House Oversight Committee argued that Barr’s testimony did not fully clear Trump of scrutiny.
Epstein’s death in August 2019 was officially ruled a suicide. His former associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, was later convicted of sex trafficking in 2021 and sentenced to 20 years in prison.
The controversy has continued to place pressure on Trump and his allies. While Trump initially said during his 2024 campaign that he might support releasing more files from the Epstein investigation, he later declared the case closed.
The House Oversight Committee is now pursuing its own inquiry, with subpoenas reportedly issued to high-profile figures including Bill and Hillary Clinton. Documents from Epstein’s estate and the Justice Department have also been turned over as part of the investigation.
