President Donald Trump has described Charlie Kirk as a “martyr” and a “giant of his generation” following the shocking news of the Turning Point USA founder’s murder.
According to reports, Trump and his inner circle are deeply shaken by the loss. New York Times correspondent Maggie Haberman noted on CNN that many of Trump’s closest allies had strong personal ties to Kirk, and that Trump himself is “struggling” with the tragedy.
Kirk, just 31 years old, was shot and killed in front of an estimated 3,000 attendees during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University. He leaves behind his wife Erika and their two young children.
Authorities quickly launched a nationwide manhunt, eventually arresting 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah. Law enforcement confirmed that Robinson’s own father, a Trump supporter, turned him in after recognizing his son as the suspect. Robinson is being held without bail.
Haberman explained that Trump’s grief is compounded by his own history of close calls, including multiple assassination attempts. A psychologist previously told The Daily Express US that Trump exhibited PTSD-like symptoms after the Butler, Pennsylvania rally shooting in 2024.
Despite those challenges, Trump took to X to honor Kirk, writing:
“No one understood or had the heart of the youth in America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by all, especially me. Melania and I send our deepest sympathies to his beautiful wife Erika and family. Charlie, we love you.”
The murder of Charlie Kirk marks a devastating loss for his family, his movement, and the political figures who considered him a trusted ally.
