Trump hopes for death penalty for Charlie Kirk shooter as suspect 'in custody'

U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that a suspect is now in custody following the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Speaking on Fox & Friends on Friday morning, Trump said he hopes the individual responsible “gets the death penalty.” He praised Kirk as “the finest person” who “didn’t deserve this” and was admired by many for his hard work and dedication.

Trump also mentioned that Utah Governor Spencer Cox is prepared to seek the death penalty if the case goes to trial. “In Utah, they have the death penalty, and the governor is very intent on pursuing it,” Trump added.

During the live broadcast, Trump said authorities have the suspect “in custody” with a “high degree of certainty,” noting that the individual was reportedly turned in by someone “very close to him.” However, he cautioned that the details remain “subject to change.”

Multiple news outlets, including the Associated Press, Reuters, and NBC News, have identified the suspect as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah. His arrest came less than 24 hours after the FBI released surveillance images of the alleged shooter.

At a press briefing, Utah officials, including Governor Cox and FBI Director KLash Patel, emphasized the need for continued public assistance in the investigation.
