Stephen King has once again used his voice to address a heated political topic, this time targeting former President Donald Trump’s recent statements on free speech. The bestselling author did not hold back in criticizing Trump, whose controversial remarks have also drawn scrutiny from major news outlets like CNN.
During a recent Oval Office appearance, Trump claimed that media coverage of him is overwhelmingly negative, stating that 94–97% of news stories portray him unfavorably. He described this as “illegal” and argued that free speech no longer exists, calling current media practices “cheating.”
King responded sharply on social media platform X, highlighting what he sees as Trump’s real concern: "For him, it's not about hate speech, but about speech that he hates namely, criticism of him and his administration."
In a follow-up post, King playfully referred to Trump’s frequent target, the New York Times, as “the failing New York Times,” drawing agreement from many supporters online. Users echoed King’s sentiment, arguing that Trump’s comments reflect a broader effort to punish dissenting voices rather than protect free speech. One user wrote, “Hate speech has always been used as an excuse to silence critics.” Another added, “The whole MAGA cult sacrificed any real freedom of speech just to worship Trump.”
CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins also criticized Trump’s remarks, noting that freedom of the press is legally protected by the First Amendment and includes both positive and negative coverage. She observed that Trump’s comments come amid controversy surrounding ABC’s decision to pull Jimmy Kimmel’s show after pressure from the FCC, illustrating a broader clash between media freedom and political influence.
King’s bold statements have fueled ongoing debates about free speech, media accountability, and political power, showing that even authors can shape public discourse on critical national issues.
Trump can certainly identify cheating...he's an expert. He's also an expert at lying.
