Why Stephen King Calls Donald Trump a "Horror Story"
Stephen King, the bestselling author known for classics like The Shining and It, has never been shy about voicing his political opinions. Over the years, he has often spoken openly about Donald Trump, and his latest remarks show he has no plans to hold back.
During a recent interview on MSNBC’s Velshi, King shared what he considers the most alarming possibility about Trump’s political future. Speaking with host Ali Velshi, he said:
“The worst thing that I could think of is that this guy would get a third term because he’s basically an idiot, isn’t he? I mean, he doesn’t read.”
King went on to explain that what truly unsettles him is Trump’s mindset. In his view, the former President seems convinced he can do no wrong—a trait King describes as “dangerous” in any leader. While he stopped short of calling Trump “crazy,” he made it clear he sees him as a serious risk.
For King, the idea of Trump winning another term feels like the plot of one of his own novels: “Trump is a horror story, isn’t he?”
This isn’t the first time King has weighed in on Trump’s presidency. In the past, he has even imagined how he would “write” an ending to Trump’s political story, saying impeachment or retirement would be the only fitting conclusions.
King’s sharp words come after he faced criticism earlier this year for a controversial joke he posted on social media. The author quipped about one of Trump’s campaign claims involving Haitian immigrants in Ohio. When some accused him of racism, King clarified that the joke was directed at Trump himself—not at immigrants. He pushed back at critics, saying: “The joke was about Trump. If you don’t get that, you should see a doctor and get your sense of humour checked.”
King has continued to use his platform to highlight what he sees as misleading claims made during Trump’s campaign trail. From false statements about immigration to exaggerated culture-war issues, the author has remained one of Trump’s most outspoken critics in the literary world.
For readers who follow both politics and pop culture, Stephen King’s comments show how deeply America’s political debates have reached into every corner of society—even horror fiction.
