Sky News halted its programming to broadcast breaking coverage of a joint press conference between U.S. President Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Within minutes, Trump highlighted a sharp disagreement with Starmer, openly criticizing the Prime Minister’s decision to recognise a Palestinian state in the coming days. Trump reminded reporters of the October 7 terror attacks, saying such recognition could be seen as rewarding Hamas. He added, “I have disagreements with the PM on that. One of our few disagreements.”
Starmer defended his policy, stressing that Hamas is a terrorist organisation with “no part in any future governance of Palestine.” He explained that both leaders agreed on the urgent need for peace, a roadmap forward, and humanitarian aid for Gaza, while also demanding the immediate release of Israeli hostages.
Trump doubled down, vividly describing what he claimed to have seen on the October 7 attack tapes. “Babies… chopped up to pieces,” he said, adding, “People forget about October 7. I can’t forget about it.”
Both leaders emphasized that recognition of Palestine must be seen within the wider context of peace talks. Trump reiterated: “I want the hostages released now. Right now. Not one, two… all of them.”
When asked about the dismissal of Peter Mandelson as UK Ambassador to the U.S. over links to Jeffrey Epstein, Trump distanced himself: “I don’t know him… I think the Prime Minister would be better speaking on that.” Starmer responded that new information had emerged after Mandelson’s appointment, which led to his decision.
The press conference highlighted one of the first major policy divides between Trump and Starmer, even as both insisted they remain united on broader efforts for Middle East peace.
