Sky News interrupted its regular broadcast last night to deliver breaking news after US President Donald Trump revealed that the US military had carried out another strike on a vessel linked to a Venezuelan drug cartel.
The announcement came directly from Trump on Truth Social, where he claimed the targeted boat was on its way to the United States carrying illegal narcotics. According to the statement, three men described as “narcoterrorists” were killed in the attack.
This marks the second strike in just two weeks. Earlier this month, a similar US operation against another cartel-linked vessel resulted in 11 deaths. Sky News showed dramatic images of the vessel engulfed in flames at sea, drawing immediate comparisons to the earlier incident.
David Blevins, Sky News’ US correspondent, reported from Washington, D.C., that the operation is closely tied to Trump’s broader border security strategy. The president has repeatedly pledged to clamp down on narcotics entering the US from Latin America, particularly cocaine and fentanyl, while moving toward a full southern border shutdown.
Trump’s Truth Social post read:
“This morning, on my Orders, US Military Forces conducted a SECOND Kinetic Strike against extraordinarily violent drug trafficking cartels and narcoterrorists in the SOUTHCOM area of responsibility. The Strike occurred while these confirmed narcoterrorists from Venezuela were in International Waters transporting illegal narcotics headed to the US.”
He emphasized that the cartels pose a direct threat to US national security, adding that no American forces were harmed in the strike.
With another military action so soon after the first, analysts say Trump is signaling a hard-line approach to both border control and transnational crime as his administration doubles down on its anti-drug efforts.
