The US President expressed disappointment in Vladimir Putin this week after Russia launched one of its largest overnight assaults on Ukraine.
Despite warnings from Donald Trump that Russian incursions into Estonian airspace could trigger “big trouble,” Moscow fired 40 missiles and around 580 drones, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The attacks hit multiple regions including Dnipro, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Odesa, Sumy, Poltava, and Kharkiv.
Tragically, three people were killed and dozens injured. In Dnipro, a residential building was struck by a missile carrying cluster munitions, Zelensky confirmed.
Thanking Ukraine’s F-16 pilots and air defense teams, Zelensky said the strikes were not acts of military necessity but deliberate attempts to terrorize civilians and destroy infrastructure. He urged the global community to respond with stronger air defense support, more weapons, and expanded sanctions against Russia.
“Every restriction on Russia saves lives. Ukraine has proven it can defend itself and Europe, but for a reliable shield, we must act together,” Zelensky said.
Meanwhile, Trump’s Ukraine envoy, Keith Kellogg, argued that Putin would ultimately “fold” in a nuclear standoff, referencing Trump’s past exchanges with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un as an example of raising the stakes effectively.
In August, Trump ordered two US nuclear submarines to reposition after provocative remarks by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, emphasizing the importance of strong words but cautioning against unintended consequences.
