Sergei Lavrov Warns West Over Sanctions, Says “They Messed With the Wrong People”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has sharply criticized Western nations over their ongoing efforts to impose economic pressure on Moscow. Speaking in a televised address, Lavrov claimed he was “amazed” by what he described as the West’s repeated attempts to “restrain, subdue and punish Russia.”
The remarks come as U.S. and European officials gathered at the U.S. Treasury Department to discuss new measures targeting Russia. According to insiders, the talks covered possible tariffs on Russian oil purchases, further sanctions, and the management of Russian sovereign assets currently frozen in Europe.
Lavrov, a close ally of President Vladimir Putin, issued a thinly veiled warning during his speech, stating: “They messed with the wrong people, you know?” He argued that Western leaders had failed to learn from “centuries of history” when dealing with Russia.
The closed-door meeting in Washington included senior representatives from the U.S. Treasury, State Department, White House, and U.S. Trade Representative’s office. The European delegation focused on energy, sanctions, and financial services. Both sides are scheduled to continue discussions this week.
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump has been attempting to mediate between Moscow and Kyiv. Last month, Trump met with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, urging him to sit down with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for direct peace talks.
Trump had previously set an August deadline for the Kremlin to end its invasion, a deadline that has already passed. Despite this, Trump recently told reporters he still believes a resolution is possible: “I believe we’re going to get it settled. I have confidence we’re going to get it done.”
