Donald Trump is expected to land in the UK later today for his second State Visit, but reports suggest his welcome may be far from unanimous.
On Good Morning Britain, presenter Susanna Reid asked correspondent Nick Dixon what kind of reception the former U.S. President should expect. Dixon explained that while Windsor Castle is preparing to roll out the red carpet with American flags lining the streets and royal protocol in full swing the atmosphere outside may be quite different.
Security is a top priority, with police teams carrying out extensive searches, erecting a seven-foot security fence around the Castle, and even deploying marine units on the River Thames. Despite these precautions, protests are already being planned to coincide with Trump’s arrival later this evening.
Dixon highlighted that public opinion remains sharply divided. Some locals and tourists welcome his visit, while others have expressed frustration. Online, reactions have been equally mixed. Supporters argue that critics only amplify Trump’s profile by protesting, while opponents question whether a figure requiring such extreme security measures is the right guest for a State Visit.
One Trump supporter online even suggested he is “more popular in the UK than mainstream media admits,” while another commentator pointed out the irony of the enormous precautions taken to ensure his safety.
With the Royals extending formal hospitality but protests ready to make their voices heard, Trump’s visit promises to be a politically charged event with a very mixed reception.
