Fox News interrupted regular programming with a breaking news alert as President Donald Trump addressed the shocking murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Speaking on air, Trump stated that authorities have “with a high degree of certainty” taken Kirk’s suspected assassin into custody. Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA and a close ally of Trump, was fatally shot during an event at Utah Valley University earlier this week. He was struck in the neck while addressing the crowd and later died at a local hospital.
According to Trump, the suspect was reportedly identified by someone “very close to him” who then alerted authorities. Trump said that the suspect’s own father, along with a U.S. Marshal, persuaded him to come forward, describing the family as “people of faith.”
Law enforcement officials have not yet released the name of the suspect. However, Trump publicly voiced his belief that the individual would be found guilty and suggested he should face the death penalty. He emphasized Utah’s history of applying capital punishment, adding that the state’s governor “is very intent on the death penalty in this case.”
Trump paid tribute to Kirk, calling him “the finest person” and highlighting his dedication to conservative activism. “He didn’t deserve this. He worked so hard and so well, everybody liked him,” Trump said.
In a further show of respect, Trump also announced plans to posthumously award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, during remarks at the Pentagon’s 9/11 remembrance ceremony.
