At the United Nations General Assembly, President Donald Trump made some of his clearest remarks yet on the war in Ukraine, signaling a notable shift in his position.
Standing alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump said he now believes Ukraine can win the war and take back all the territory it has lost to Russia. This came after weeks of skepticism in which Trump had previously argued that time favored Moscow and even suggested Kyiv might need to make territorial concessions.
When pressed by reporters about whether he still trusted Vladimir Putin, Trump offered a cryptic response: “I will let you know in about a month from now.”
In his UN address, Trump strongly criticized the Russian leader, describing Putin’s handling of the war as an example of “bad leadership.” He mocked Russia’s military struggles, saying the war was supposed to be “a little skirmish” but instead has turned into a disaster that makes Moscow look weak.
Trump went further on his Truth Social platform, calling Russia’s military “a paper tiger” and stressing that Putin has pushed his country into deep economic trouble. He argued that, with European support especially from NATO Ukraine has a real chance to restore its original borders.
“After seeing the economic trouble it is causing Russia, I think Ukraine, with support from the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form,” Trump posted.
He added that the U.S. would continue supplying weapons through NATO, allowing the alliance to “do what they want with them.”
Trump’s latest comments mark a departure from his earlier belief that Zelenskyy “didn’t have the cards” to stand against Russia. Now, after his fourth meeting with Zelenskyy since returning to office, Trump is striking a much more optimistic tone, praising Ukraine’s resilience and saying he has “great respect” for the fight the country is putting up.
With tensions between NATO and Moscow escalating, Trump’s statements could signal a more aggressive U.S. stance on the war going forward.
