In several recent appearances, former President Donald Trump has been noticed keeping his left hand firmly placed over his right hand, often while speaking from the Oval Office. Observers pointed out that this has happened repeatedly, with some noting he no longer gestures as much with his right hand.
The speculation stems from a visible dark bruise on Trump’s right hand that has been observed over the past month. At times, he has even appeared to conceal the discoloration with makeup.
When asked, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained that the bruising is due to a combination of frequent handshakes with world leaders and Trump’s ongoing aspirin therapy, which can cause minor bruising as a side effect. In August, she stated:
“Recent photos of the president have shown minor bruising on the back of his hand. This is consistent with soft tissue irritation from frequent handshaking and the use of aspirin, which is part of a standard cardiovascular prevention regimen. The president remains in excellent health.”
Additionally, in July, the White House disclosed that Trump has chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a condition that reduces circulation in certain parts of the body, most often the extremities. This condition, more common in individuals over 70, can also explain swelling in his ankles that has been visible in public photographs.
Despite the attention, the official line is that the issue is minor, not serious, and connected to routine health management rather than a major medical concern.
