President Donald Trump has opened a new front in the ongoing U.S.-EU trade tensions, this time targeting European regulators for imposing multi-billion-dollar fines on Google.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump criticized the European Union’s move, arguing that the penalties were unfairly directed at American technology companies. He wrote that the EU was “effectively taking money that would otherwise go to American investments and jobs,” warning that such actions would not be tolerated under his administration.
Trump declared, “They should get their money back! We cannot let this happen to brilliant and unprecedented American ingenuity. If it does, I will be forced to start a Section 301 proceeding to nullify the unfair penalties being charged to these taxpaying American companies.”
What is Section 301?
Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act of 1974 allows Washington to investigate and retaliate against foreign governments that impose policies deemed unfair or discriminatory against American businesses.
Trump famously invoked Section 301 against China in 2018, sparking the U.S.–China trade war that led to sweeping tariffs and disrupted global supply chains. His latest comments suggest he may be prepared to use the same tool against the European Union.
Why the EU is Targeting Google
The European Commission recently ordered Google to address alleged “conflicts of interest” in the digital advertising market. Regulators claim that Google abused its dominance by favoring its own ad services over competitors.
To resolve the issue, the EU has threatened to break up parts of Google’s business if necessary, saying past fines and rulings have failed to change its practices. Google has 60 days to present remedies.
In response, Google said the decision was “wrong” and confirmed it would appeal, arguing that such measures would harm European businesses by limiting their ability to earn advertising revenue.
Rising U.S.-EU Tensions
Trump’s sharp warning comes just weeks after Washington and Brussels reached a limited trade deal aimed at reducing tariffs. His threat to launch Section 301 proceedings risks reigniting a broader transatlantic trade dispute at a time when both sides are already managing sensitive economic and geopolitical challenges.
While the EU maintains that its actions are about ensuring fair competition, Trump is framing the issue as an attack on American innovation. If he follows through, it could set the stage for another major trade confrontation this time with America’s European allies.
