U.S. President Donald Trump has taken a surprising turn in his stance on the Russia-Ukraine war. Speaking shortly after his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Trump declared that Ukraine, with strong European support, could “win all of Ukraine back.”
This marks a dramatic reversal. For months, Trump had hinted that Ukraine might have to give up territory occupied by Russian forces as part of any ceasefire deal. As recently as last month, after meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Trump had suggested compromise might be the only way forward.
Now, Trump is striking a different tone. In a post on Truth Social, he argued that Russia’s economy is under severe strain due to sanctions and the costs of war, while Ukraine’s military spirit and Western backing could allow it to reclaim all its territory. He put much of the responsibility on NATO and the European Union, saying:
“With time, patience, and financial support from Europe and NATO, Ukraine’s original borders are very much an option. Why not?”
While Trump stopped short of pledging direct new U.S. military aid, he did promise continued support for NATO, noting that the alliance could use American-supplied weapons as it sees fit. He also branded Russia a “paper tiger,” claiming that a true military superpower would have won the war in less than a week.
Trump further suggested that once ordinary Russians fully understand the toll of the war fuel shortages, long lines, and a weakened economy they may turn against Putin’s campaign, giving Ukraine the chance to restore its sovereignty.
For Zelensky, Trump’s words are a boost. Ukraine’s leader has repeatedly urged the U.S. to remain firm against Moscow. If Trump holds to this new position, it could signal stronger Western unity at a critical moment in the war.
