Tensions between NATO and Moscow have escalated sharply after a reported Russian drone incursion into Poland, prompting U.S. President Donald Trump to issue a strong warning to Vladimir Putin.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump said he is prepared to impose “major sanctions” on Russia, but only if NATO members take coordinated action specifically by cutting off purchases of Russian oil. He criticized certain NATO countries for continuing energy trade with Moscow, arguing that it undermines the alliance’s bargaining power.
Trump also suggested that NATO should place heavy tariffs on China between 50% and 100% until the war in Ukraine is resolved. According to him, such measures would pressure Beijing, which he claimed maintains influence over Russia, and help accelerate an end to the conflict.
In his message, Trump emphasized:
- The war in Ukraine would not have started under his presidency.
- The ongoing conflict is a result of decisions by President Biden and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
- He wants to prevent further loss of life, pointing to recent reports of thousands of casualties.
He concluded by urging NATO to “do as I say” in order to end the war quickly and prevent unnecessary deaths.
Meanwhile, the situation in Eastern Europe remains tense. On Wednesday, fighter jets from Poland, the Netherlands, and Italy were scrambled to intercept Russian drones that reportedly crossed into NATO airspace from Belarus. A NATO source told German outlet Die Welt that the drones appeared to be targeting a Polish military base connected to Ukraine’s defense supplies.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that Europe is now facing the greatest risk of direct conflict since World War II.
The Kremlin, however, denied targeting Poland. Russia’s defense ministry claimed the drones cited by NATO could not have reached Polish territory due to their limited range, while signaling willingness to discuss the matter with Polish leaders.
