U.S. President Donald Trump has revealed that Washington is looking into regaining control of Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, a facility once considered one of America’s most important military assets in South Asia.
Speaking during a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on his second state visit to the U.K., Trump suggested that discussions are underway with Afghanistan. He described the base as strategically vital, pointing out that it lies “about an hour away from where China makes its nuclear weapons.”
Trump stressed:
“We’re trying to get it back because they need things from us. We want that base back.”
The former president has frequently criticized Joe Biden’s handling of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, arguing it left behind advanced weaponry and key infrastructure, including Bagram. He has also suggested the site is now influenced by China a claim Afghan officials have rejected.
Historically, Bagram Air Base, located roughly 24 miles north of Kabul, served as a central hub for U.S. operations in the region. Its location near China, Pakistan, India, and Central Asia made it a critical stronghold for both logistical support and strategic military reach.
With rising tensions in Asia and global focus on China’s growing influence, Trump’s comments have reignited debate over whether Washington will attempt to re-establish a presence at the base.
