Donald Trump says threat of World War III has been averted during joint press conference with Keir Starmer
During a joint press conference at Chequers alongside UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, US President Donald Trump warned that the war in Ukraine had once carried the risk of escalating into a third world war. However, he expressed confidence that the danger had now been avoided.
President Trump said he was disappointed in Russian President Vladimir Putin for refusing to end the conflict, adding:
“That’s a war that could have been a third world war and I don’t think we are going to be there now. That was heading to a third world war. And what a shame it is.”
He noted that millions of lives had already been lost, with the scale of casualties not seen since World War II. Trump also praised the UK for committing 5% of GDP to defence spending at the NATO summit, calling it a “vital commitment” to global security.
The President further claimed that the US had successfully resolved “seven wars that were once unsolvable” but admitted Ukraine was proving more difficult than expected:
“The one that I thought would be easiest, because of my relationship with President Putin, he’s really let me down.”
Prime Minister Starmer echoed Trump’s remarks, stressing that the US and UK were united in their efforts to bring peace to Ukraine and address ongoing crises in the Middle East. He highlighted recent escalations, saying:
“Putin has shown his true face, mounting the biggest attack since the invasion began… These are not the actions of someone who wants peace.”
Starmer emphasized that both countries were working together to strengthen NATO defences, provide humanitarian aid, and increase diplomatic pressure on Moscow to secure a lasting peace deal.
