During a White House State Dining Room event with some of the biggest names in tech, Donald Trump shared several lighthearted moments with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
The dinner, which brought together tech leaders including Apple’s Tim Cook, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, and Google co-founder Sergey Brin, focused on artificial intelligence and investment in the U.S. economy. Elon Musk, however, was notably absent.
One of the most talked-about moments came when Trump put Zuckerberg on the spot in front of cameras, asking how much Meta planned to invest in the U.S. over the next few years. Caught off guard, Zuckerberg responded with an estimate of “at least $600 billion through 2028.” Trump laughed at the number, calling it “a lot,” while Zuckerberg admitted it was “significant.”
Later in the evening, a hot mic picked up Zuckerberg apologizing to Trump, admitting he wasn’t sure how to answer the president’s unexpected question. Trump appeared amused, smiling alongside First Lady Melania Trump as Zuckerberg added, “I wasn’t sure what number you wanted to go with.”
The playful exchange didn’t end there. When a reporter asked Zuckerberg about online free speech laws in the UK, Trump joked that the Meta boss hadn’t expected the question. Laughing, Trump teased Zuckerberg by saying, “This is the beginning of your political career.”
The exchange between Trump and Zuckerberg quickly spread online, not just because of the investment figure but also because of the candid, unscripted nature of their interaction.
