During the United Nations General Assembly this week, former U.S. President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Shortly after, Trump made a surprising shift in his stance on the war, declaring that Ukraine could win back all of its lost territory with the help of Europe and NATO.
However, experts remain skeptical of Trump’s approach to Russian President Vladimir Putin. On DW News, German journalist Malte Lehming argued that Trump’s changing tactics have not produced results.
“Trump has no clue what to do with Vladimir Putin. He tries different ways. Intimidation didn’t work. Hugging him in Alaska didn’t work. Confusing him didn’t work. Putin still sends his rockets, and is not impressed by what Trump says,” Lehming explained.
For months, Trump had suggested that Ukraine would need to concede territory to end the war an idea that worried Zelensky, European allies, and Ukrainians. Now, his sudden endorsement of Kyiv’s goal to reclaim all occupied land, including Crimea, marks a major departure. Zelensky welcomed the shift, calling Trump “a game changer by himself,” though many remain unsure whether this commitment will last.
Trump has repeatedly promised he could end the war quickly, citing his personal relationship with Putin. Yet his diplomatic efforts, including a recent summit with Putin and talks with European allies, have not brought a breakthrough. He has hinted at possible new sanctions on Russia but faces pressure to prove that his strategies can actually influence Moscow’s actions.
The big question remains: Can Trump’s evolving stance truly help Ukraine, or will his inconsistent tactics continue to leave Putin unmoved?
