CNN interrupted programming for urgent breaking news as Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner directly challenged President Donald Trump during a live interview. The sharp exchange comes as Trump pushes his plan for a tougher crackdown on crime in major U.S. cities, including Washington, D.C.
Speaking on CNN’s Early Start with host MJ Lee, Krasner accused Trump of spreading falsehoods about crime rates in cities like Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington.
“We’re talking about a man convicted of 34 felonies. We’re talking about someone who lies all the time. One of those lies is that big cities are failing on public safety. In fact, Philadelphia just hit a 50-year low in crime, with homicides down in 14 out of 18 categories,” Krasner stated.
He went further, calling Trump’s rhetoric dangerous:
“This is just a lie by a criminal who pardons criminals. Simply put, the only crisis here is Donald Trump. He wants a crisis so he can roll tanks into cities and normalize it. He wants that because he intends to carry out a coup.”
Trump’s legal troubles remain at the center of national debate. In May 2024, a New York jury found him guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records. Despite that, in January 2025 he received an “unconditional discharge,” meaning no penalties were imposed.
This made Trump the first U.S. president to enter office with a felony conviction. He has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, telling reporters:
“I was treated very, very unfairly. I am totally innocent. It has been a terrible experience.”
Krasner’s remarks have intensified the already heated political climate, sparking renewed debate over Trump’s criminal record, crime policy, and his influence on American democracy.
