Donald Trump is facing growing backlash from his own Conservative base as frustration mounts over the impact of his tariffs on everyday Americans.
CNN recently aired a report from Morristown, Tennessee, where residents voiced strong criticism of the president’s economic policies. Locals described skyrocketing prices for basic goods, with one voter, Linda Bradley, saying: “Sometimes things are four times what they were a year ago, it’s awful.”
Another resident explained that his weekly expenses had more than tripled, rising from $40 to $140. “I just don’t think it’s going to go down for a long time,” he said, before adding, “They’re not concerned with people like us.” Others argued that Trump’s tariffs, which were supposed to lower costs, have instead driven them higher.
This discontent comes just seven months into Trump’s second term. Tariffs had been one of his signature campaign promises, which he argued would reduce trade deficits, create jobs, and even fund social policies like childcare subsidies. But instead, data shows manufacturers have cut over 40,000 jobs and the construction sector has shed 8,000 positions since the tariffs were introduced.
Public opinion has shifted as well. According to US News, Trump’s approval rating on economic leadership stood at 56% in early 2020, during his first term. By July of this year, that number had dropped to just 38%, only two months after the new tariffs were rolled out.
Despite voter frustrations, Trump has continued to defend his policies. In a recent press conference, he insisted inflation is “down to a perfect number” and praised the revenue tariffs have brought into the U.S. Treasury. He also claimed that gas and energy prices are falling, framing the tariffs as proof that America is no longer being “taken advantage of.”
The split between Trump’s promises and the lived reality of voters highlights the growing tension between economic policy goals and their everyday impact on families.
