Ukraine is once again mourning after a brutal Russian airstrike killed more than 20 civilians in the village of Yarova, Donetsk region. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, the attack struck people as they stood in line to collect their pensions.
On his official Telegram channel, Zelensky called the strike “frankly brutal”, emphasizing that it deliberately targeted ordinary people. He shared disturbing footage showing the aftermath, writing:
“The number of dead is more than 20 people. There are no words. Condolences to the families of the deceased. Such strikes should not remain without an appropriate reaction from the world.”
He urged the United States, Europe, and the G20 to take stronger action, warning that silence and inaction only embolden Russia.
Regional governor Vadym Filashkin confirmed at least 21 deaths and many more injured, calling it “pure terrorism.” Ukrainian officials said emergency services are still working at the scene to help survivors and assess the full scale of the tragedy.
Former Ukrainian interior ministry spokesman Anton Geraschenko also condemned the strike, writing that Russia is committing “brutal killings of civilians for no reason” and continues to act with a sense of impunity.
This attack came just a day after Russia launched its largest aerial assault on Ukraine since the invasion began over three years ago. That strike involved more than 800 drones and decoys, killing at least four people, including a mother and her infant, and damaging key government buildings in Kyiv.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, and Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko led over 60 foreign diplomats through the charred remains of government offices in Kyiv. Svyrydenko described the destruction as a “clear signal that Russia does not want peace and is openly mocking diplomatic efforts.”
