Ukraine war could become 'World War III' as Putin 'spits in face' of NATO

Ukraine’s UN envoy, Andriy Melnyk, has issued one of the strongest warnings yet about Russia’s growing aggression. After Russian drones recently violated Polish airspace, Melnyk cautioned that the next escalation could involve strikes on major Western European capitals such as Berlin, London, or Paris and potentially even the United States.

Although the drones carried no explosives, analysts believe the incursion was a deliberate attempt by Moscow to “test” NATO’s response without crossing the line into direct conflict. Polish Foreign Minister RadosÅ‚aw Sikorski echoed this view, stressing that the move was not accidental.

Melnyk told the UN that ignoring these provocations could have disastrous consequences:

  • “Tomorrow it could be drones or missiles over Berlin, Paris, or London. The next day, something could even fly across the Atlantic.”
  • He warned that if the UN Security Council fails to act, the world risks sliding toward World War III.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) confirmed that Russian long-range strikes against Ukraine have intensified sharply since mid-August 2025, suggesting a broader escalation strategy.

Meanwhile, Washington has reaffirmed its commitment to NATO. Dorothy Shea, the US Acting Permanent Representative to the UN, emphasized that America will defend “every inch of NATO territory” while continuing to push Moscow toward direct negotiations with Kyiv.

Europe is also stepping up its defenses. French President Emmanuel Macron announced the deployment of three advanced Rafale fighter jets to Poland, underscoring NATO’s readiness to counter further Russian aggression. The move was coordinated with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

This latest development highlights a dangerous reality: Russia’s actions are no longer confined to Ukraine’s borders. NATO’s eastern flank has become a testing ground, and Western leaders now face the challenge of responding firmly enough to prevent escalation without triggering a full-scale war.
