Did Donald Trump really say he was going to “war” with Chicago?

Recently, President Donald Trump lashed out at a Fox News reporter who asked if he was trying to go to war with Chicago. Dressed in a blue suit and red tie, Trump leaned forward and snapped back:

“When you say that, darling, that’s fake news. I don’t go to war with the Department of Defense. Be quiet. You don’t listen, you never listen, that’s why you’re second grade. We’re not going to war. We’re going to clean up our cities so they don’t kill five people every weekend. That’s not war – that’s common sense.”

This exchange came shortly after Trump shared an AI-generated image on social media that depicted him as a military commander from the film Apocalypse Now. The edited poster read “Chipocalypse Now” and was captioned: “I love the smell of deportations in the morning… Chicago is about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR.”

The post fueled backlash, with critics arguing that it suggested Trump wanted to militarize Chicago in order to expand deportations and boost federal presence, similar to his previous actions in Washington, DC and Los Angeles.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker strongly condemned Trump’s rhetoric, writing:

“The President of the United States is threatening to go to war with an American city. This is not a joke. This is not normal. Donald Trump isn’t a strongman; he’s a scared man. Illinois won’t be intimidated by a wannabe dictator.”

The controversy highlights Trump’s ongoing hardline stance on immigration and urban violence, and it has sparked a heated debate over whether deploying military personnel inside U.S. cities represents “law and order” or an attack on democratic norms.
