Vladimir Putin has once again intensified his assault on Ukraine, launching a wave of devastating airstrikes just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump urged him to stop the bloodshed.
Despite Trump’s public appeal for “peace and restraint,” the Russian leader showed no sign of backing down. Overnight, Russia’s MiG-31 bombers unleashed Kinzhal (Dagger) hypersonic missiles and hundreds of attack drones across Ukraine, targeting key power plants and civilian infrastructure.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that over 300 drones and 37 missiles were launched in a single night one of the heaviest bombardments in months. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Zelensky condemned the attacks, saying:
“Putin has turned a deaf ear to the world’s calls for peace. The only language he understands now is pressure through sanctions and long-range capabilities. The future of this war depends on decisions made in Washington, Europe, and by all our partners.”
The timing of Putin’s offensive raised eyebrows worldwide. It came just as Zelensky prepared to visit Washington for high-level talks with Trump amid reports that the U.S. might supply Tomahawk long-range missiles to Ukraine.
Trump acknowledged that Kyiv has requested new weapons to strike back at Russian military targets. Speaking to reporters, he said:
“They want to go on the offensive. I’ll make a determination on that. There are other options too.”
The Tomahawk missile capable of striking targets over 1,500 miles away with a 1,000-pound payload could change the dynamics of the war if delivered to Ukraine. However, Moscow has warned that such a move would represent a “serious escalation.”
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said:
“Just imagine: a long-range missile is launched, and it could be nuclear. What should Russia think? How should we react?”
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s army reported that over 1,000 Russian troops were killed or wounded in the last 24 hours alone, as Putin’s invasion continues to bleed both nations.
The latest escalation highlights how fragile Trump’s efforts for “world peace” truly are and how determined Putin remains to defy international pressure.
