During a tense live segment on ABC News, anchor George Stephanopoulos held firm as Senator JD Vance tried to deflect questions about former border czar Thomas Homan’s alleged $50,000 bribe. What began as a routine interview quickly turned into a heated exchange that’s now circulating widely online.
When pressed about the reports of an FBI-recorded audio clip in which Homan allegedly accepted cash for influencing government contracts, Vance went on the defensive, accusing the network of bias.
“George, I saw media reports that Tom Homan accepted a bribe. There’s no evidence of that,” Vance complained. “And this is why fewer people trust your program. You’re focused on a bogus story while Democrats have shut down the government.”
Rather than addressing the direct question, Vance attempted to shift the conversation toward the government shutdown, blaming Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Democrats for the crisis. He accused Stephanopoulos of pushing a “left-wing narrative” and ignoring “real issues.”
But Stephanopoulos refused to let the senator dodge the question. Calmly, he replied:
“It’s not a weird left-wing rabbit hole. I didn’t insinuate anything. I asked whether Tom Homan accepted $50,000, as heard on an audio tape recorded by the FBI in September 2024 and you did not answer the question.”
The exchange ended abruptly, with Stephanopoulos cutting to commercial after thanking Vance for his time. Viewers quickly took to social media to praise the host’s composure and fact-based approach, calling it an example of responsible journalism in an era of political misinformation.
