Reports suggest that Russian President Vladimir Putin was likely in Sochi when a Ukrainian drone strike hit the Black Sea resort city overnight. The attack resulted in the death of a car driver and damage to several homes.

Sochi has long been known as Putin’s favorite retreat. At 72, the Russian leader often spends time at his official residence, Bocharov Ruchey, which is currently undergoing reconstruction. His partner, former Olympic gymnast Alina Kabaeva, is also reported to own a luxury penthouse in the city.

It remains unclear whether Putin himself was the target of the drone strikes. However, Russian air defense systems were highly active that night, intercepting multiple drones over the Krasnodar region and the Black Sea. The heightened restrictions in Sochi such as bans on filming strikes or sharing details about military facilities have fueled speculation that Putin’s presence prompted tighter security.

Local authorities confirmed damage to seven private houses and several cars, as well as the destruction of the grave of Soviet war pilot Sergey Troepolsky near Sochi airport. Sochi’s mayor, Andrey Proshunin, stated that cleanup efforts began immediately after the incident.

The Kremlin confirmed Putin was in Sochi earlier in the day when he joined a virtual BRICS summit organized by Brazilian President Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva, focusing on U.S. tariffs and sanctions. His official aircraft, the Il-96-300PU (known as the “Flying Kremlin”), was also spotted at Sochi airport.

Putin has largely avoided extended stays in Sochi during the ongoing war, though he has made brief visits. In addition to his residence there, he is known to own a vast clifftop palace in Gelendzhik, about 96 miles away, which itself came under drone attack in late August.
