Donald Trump has delivered one of his strongest condemnations of Vladimir Putin in a fiery statement posted on his Truth Social platform. Speaking after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the United Nations in New York, Trump praised Ukraine’s determination and mocked Russia’s faltering military campaign.
The U.S. President hailed Ukraine’s “brave resistance,” saying his administration “deeply respected” the courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people. He noted that Kyiv’s forces had recently achieved significant victories, including reclaiming 360 square kilometers of territory and capturing around 1,000 Russian soldiers. Calling these developments a turning point, Trump declared that Ukraine was doing “a very effective job” of pushing back against Moscow’s invasion.
In his post, Trump ridiculed Russia’s military performance with a sharp two-word jab, saying the conflict had exposed Putin’s army as a “paper tiger.” He argued that a true military power would never have taken more than a week to overwhelm its neighbor, yet after three and a half years of war, Russia appeared drained and directionless.
Trump went further, suggesting Ukraine could eventually restore its original borders if it had enough support from NATO and European allies. He insisted that “with time, patience, and financial backing, Ukraine regaining its full territory remains very much an option.” His remarks marked a striking contrast with earlier suggestions from Washington that Kyiv might need to surrender some land for peace negotiations.
The President also turned his attention to Russia’s struggling economy, warning that Putin was in “big economic trouble.” He implied that sanctions and the cost of war were tightening the pressure on the Kremlin, giving Ukraine a strategic advantage if it maintained momentum.
Reaffirming his administration’s support, Trump stated: “We will continue to supply weapons to NATO for NATO to do what they want with them. Good luck to all!”
The comments are likely to reverberate both in Kyiv and Moscow. For Ukraine, they signal renewed U.S. confidence in its ability to reclaim lost ground. For Russia, they underscore international perceptions of a weakening military and deepening economic crisis. Trump’s words also highlight his willingness to take a tougher public stance against Putin, positioning Ukraine as a resilient nation capable of shaping the outcome of this prolonged conflict.
The reason Trump has changed sides is that Russia financial troubles will leave Russia unable to reward Trump for his support.
