Russia’s military leadership is reportedly facing major turmoil as pressure mounts on General Valery Gerasimov, the current Chief of the General Staff and overall commander of Kremlin forces in Ukraine.
For months, Gerasimov has faced sharp criticism over the army’s poor performance, with Russian forces struggling to achieve many of the Kremlin’s stated goals. Despite his attempts in late August to highlight “successes” in Ukraine claiming thousands of square kilometers captured, around 150 settlements seized, and near-encirclement of Kupiansk independent assessments from Western experts, Ukrainian officials, and even pro-Russian military bloggers suggest a far less impressive outcome.
These reported gains have come at a steep cost, with significant losses in both soldiers and equipment. Analysts say the reality on the ground does not match Gerasimov’s optimistic declarations.
Now, President Vladimir Putin is said to be losing patience. According to Russian Telegram channel General SVR, which claims ties to intelligence insiders, a sweeping shake-up of Russia’s military leadership may be imminent. The channel alleges that up to 80% of the General Staff could be replaced in a large-scale purge. It also claims Gerasimov has been warned that his time in power is coming to an end leading him to turn to heavy drinking, further damaging his standing.
While the Kremlin has not confirmed these reports, speculation is growing about a major reshuffle at the top of Russia’s defense establishment. General SVR, though controversial, has previously gained attention for bold claims about the Kremlin, including rumors about Putin’s health that Moscow has consistently denied.
If these reports are accurate, Russia may soon see one of the biggest shake-ups in its military command since the start of the war in Ukraine.
