Putin warned over repeated violations of NATO airspace by Russia

The United Kingdom has issued a strong warning to Russia, signaling it will act decisively if Moscow continues its incursions into NATO airspace. This development has heightened concerns about escalating tensions in Eastern Europe and the risk of a broader conflict.

UK Defence Secretary Jon Healey emphasized the country’s readiness, stating, “Our Typhoons are fully equipped to take out Russian drones that enter NATO airspace. We will not hesitate to act.” This comes after a recent incident where three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets breached Estonian airspace for 12 minutes, marking the third NATO airspace violation in just over a week.

The incidents are part of a pattern of increased Russian aerial activity. Earlier, Russian drones were detected over Polish and Romanian territory, raising alarms about Moscow’s strategic testing of NATO’s defenses.

Tensions escalated further as NATO fighter jets were deployed again this week following additional Russian drone attacks on Ukraine. US President Donald Trump also weighed in, warning of potential “big trouble” over Russia’s incursions into Estonia.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) noted that Russia appears to be deliberately testing NATO’s defensive capabilities and political resolve. “Russia is intensifying efforts to probe NATO’s air defense and gather intelligence on its response strategies,” the institute reported.

Highlighting the UK’s firm stance, Healey wrote in the Mail on Sunday, “Britain will not be cowed,” drawing a historical parallel to the RAF’s heroism during the Battle of Britain. He added, “RAF pilots and crew are once again standing shoulder to shoulder with Poland in defense of our shared security, making us secure at home and strong abroad.”

Recent activity includes a September 19 flyby by Russian fighter jets over the Polish Lotos Petrobaltic oil and gas platform in the Baltic Sea, violating the platform’s safety zone. Experts warn these actions reflect a calculated effort by Russia to assess NATO’s readiness for potential conflicts.

With tensions rising across Eastern Europe, NATO’s air policing missions remain on high alert as member states watch Russia’s next moves closely.
