Moment late Queen 'scolded' Princess Anne for 'snubbing' Trump in viral moment

A video from Donald Trump’s 2019 state visit to the UK went viral at the time, with many people claiming that Princess Anne appeared to “snub” the former U.S. president.

The clip was filmed inside Buckingham Palace during a reception hosted by Queen Elizabeth II. The late Queen, along with then-Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, greeted Donald and Melania Trump in the receiving line. Princess Anne, standing slightly apart, became the focus of social media commentary after she shrugged her shoulders when her mother gestured toward her.

Some viewers believed the Queen was urging her daughter to step forward to greet the Trumps, and Anne’s casual shrug sparked amusement online. Social media users quickly shared the clip with captions like, “She’s saying hurry up, I’ve got my horses to feed!”

However, royal experts later clarified the situation. According to royal author Valentine Low, Queen Elizabeth wasn’t scolding Anne at all. Instead, the Queen was simply checking who was next in line to be introduced. Princess Anne reportedly raised her hands and joked, “It’s just me,” since there were no more dignitaries waiting behind her.

While the viral moment entertained many, others pointed out that the clip was taken out of context. Some royal watchers stressed that Anne was actually engaged with the group and smiling, not snubbing anyone.

Fast forward to today, Donald Trump has returned to the UK for an unprecedented second state visit. Accompanied by his wife, Melania, he will be welcomed with full ceremony, including a Red Arrows flypast, a Beating Retreat, and a state banquet at Windsor Castle. The couple will also pay their respects at St George’s Chapel, where the late Queen Elizabeth II is laid to rest.

This renewed attention on Trump’s 2019 visit shows how easily short clips can create viral moments, even when the context tells a different story.
